Best Period Underwear 2024

19 July 2024  |  Admin

It's now almost 16 years since we launched our range of 'Simple Reusables' here at Cheeky.  Way back in 2008, we launched with our bestselling sustainable reusable wipes kit.

A few years later, having had more children, it's fair to say that tampons and menstrual cups were no longer suitable for me and I didn't want to wear plastic laden sanitary pads. This started our journey looking for more ecofriendly menstrual products as an alternative to disposable period protection like tampons and pads.

Hence Cheeky Pants was launched.

When we started with our reusable period pants and pads around 9 or 10 years ago, no one else was doing it. But thankfully for our planet there's much more awareness now of the impact of disposable pads and tampons, never mind the potential health problems associated with tampons.

This means that lots of brands are also now offering reusable period products too. But it can still be tricky to know where to start, especially when they throw absorbency levels like super maxi / ultimate / super heavy into the mix.

There are TWO things to bear in mind when shopping for period pants:

  • All Period Pants work in the same way, no matter what their marketing says
  • The absorbent area covered is super important...i.e. not just in the gusset

Here's how period pants work:

  • a moisture wicking layer next to your skin
  • absorbent layer or layers to absorb the blood
  • leak proof layers

Side by side, there's little to differentiate between different brands of period pants in terms of the actual product, aside from fit and style. And some fit / styles work better for some people than others.

However the absorbent / waterproof layer area is really important if you do anything more than sit or stand upright. For example if you're sitting down watching TV or sleeping. If you just have absorbency in the usual gusset area, you may get leaks to the front or rear.

At Cheeky, almost all of our period pants have absorbency to front and rear waistband as standard, because we think it's super important.

So although we think that shopping with us is a great place to start as we're also the most trusted period pants brand with over 9000 Trustpilot reviews, we appreciate that, just like us, you have Google!

So to help you along the way, we've created this list of the best period pants of 2024:

Best Period Underwear 2024

We've selected each of these choices based on the brands, material, comfort level, absorbency and customer reviews.

Wuka Stretch Seamless

Best Seamless Period Underwear: WUKA Stretch Seamless Midi Brief

These Wuka Period Pants are suitable for heavy periods and because they are super stretchy will work across a number of sizes.

The seam free design is also good, however it's worth noting that although these are advertised as 'full coverage' the absorbency is within a medium gusset area, so may not work for heavy periods overnight.

Material: Nylon, Elastane

Absorbency: Heavy Flow

Design: Seamless

Size: Size XS to L and L to 3XL

Price: £16.99

Customer Reviews"Best period pants I've tried in a while, super comfortable and absorbent. When they arrived they looked so small, I thought there was no way they'd fit, but like magic the stretch to fit without digging in. I feel supported and comfortable all day long. Thank you Wuka."

What We Like: Seamless, VPL fit. And just 2 sizes available.

Things To Consider: May not be suitable for heavy flow overnight and made from manmade materials.

Cheeky Maternity & Postpartum Pants

Best Maternity / Postpartum Period Underwear: Cheeky Maternity / Postpartum £8.50

Our maternity and postpartum support pants are brilliant towards the end of pregnancy and 4th trimester. Designed to help you recover from birth, they're supportive and comfortable. Top Tip: Size UP!

Customer Reviews: "So comfortable and great protection! The material is so soft, and the coverage ia the best yet. I 100% recommend these"

What We Like: Super supportive, yet still comfortable

Things To Consider: Manmade material, if you'd prefer natural materials consider Cheeky bamboo period shorts instead.

Cheeky Cosy Shorts

Best Period Underwear for Overnight: Cheeky Cosy Shorts £13.49

Cheeky Cosy shorts are what pretty much everyone in our office (or their teens) wears to sleep in on their period.

The absorbency runs from front and rear waistband but they are made from breathable bamboo so are comfy and cool to wear. Super comfortable, super absorbent for even the heaviest periods.

Material: Bamboo Viscose / Elastane

Absorbency: Super absorbent for all periods

Design: Period Shorts

Size: Size 2 / 4 to 28 / 30

Price: From £13.49 per pair. Multibuy offers available.

Customer Reviews: "Life changing. I'm actually mad it took me so long to get on board. I have PCOS and always had heavy periods, regular pads/tampons of the highest absorbency were never leak proof, constantly leaking, I wouldn't sleep during my period as I was always uncomfortable and worried about leaking in my sleep. Not anymore! These period shorts are amazing, they're comfortable, the absorbent part is quite literally from front to back and nice and wide......It's so much less hassle, it's as simple as changing your underwear which we all do everyday anyway so give it a go, I guarantee you won't be disappointed." Product Review

What We Like: These are just so comfortable to wear

Things To Consider: Take a while to dry, but drying inside out will speed things up!

m&s Period Underwear Review: High Waisted

Best Period Underwear on a Budget: M&S Full Brief Heavy Flow £17.50 for 3 pairs

M&S is a High st stalwart, well loved for their good quality and good prices too.  They've come up trumps with these well priced 'heavy flow' period pants which are very gorgeous and I would say a 'dupe' for the more expensive Understatement pants below.

Material: 62% polyamide, 27% cotton and 11% elastane

Absorbency: Gusset area

Design: Lacy Full Brief

Size: Size 8 to 24

Price: £17.50 for 3 pairs

Customer Reviews: "Excellent period pants in good price. High absorbency with no leaks. Easy to wash and air dry. Have bought multiple pairs over the year. I am wearing them all the time do not need to buy any other products whilst on my period."

What We Like: These look gorgeous and definitely don't look like period pants

Things To Consider: Manmade material and these contain 'antimicrobial silver' which we think is gimmicky and unnecessary at best and potentially unsafe at worst. According to one customer review, this is NOT detailed in the online description, and she only realised when she received the underwear.   We also wouldn't consider these heavy flow at all because there is ZERO absorbency to the rear!

Best Plus Size Postpartum Pants : Cheeky Fearless

Best High Waisted Period Underwear: Cheeky Fearless Heavy Flow £13.99

Cheeky Fearless are very popular here at Cheeky HQ, especially with our plus size ladies. These high waisted period pants are made from breathable bamboo viscose, with mesh side panels to keep you cool, plus have 5 layers of absorbency so are SUPER absorbent.

These have the widest size range of any period pants we can find, so hopefully there will be a size to suit you.

Absorbency: Absorbency from front to rear waistband so are great even for endometriosis or severely heavy periods.

Design: High-waisted

Size: Size 4 / 6 to 28 / 30

Customer Reviews"I have extremely heavy periods, and the moon cup barely lasts an hour, took a risk with these, and life changer, lasted me 5 hours no leaks, will be ordering 3 more pairs next week! Really comfy too" Product Review

What We Like: Super absorbent, super comfy

Things To Consider: May take a while to dry, so dry inside out

Modibodi classic Boyshort

Best Heavy Flow Period Underwear: Modibodi Classic Boyshort £23.99

Modibodi are an Australian brand who specialise in period pants. Their classic boyshorts are made from breathable bamboo viscose so will be comfortable to wear in bed, although it's worth noting that the absorbency doesn't go all the way to the front waistband.

Material: Bamboo Viscose

Absorbency: From front gusset to rear waistband, may not be totally suitable if you sleep on your front.

Design: Period Shorts

Size: Size 8 to 20

Price: £23.99

Even when small things aren't satisfactory they are always courteous and quick to fix any issue. Love their passion for supporting women in need and their commitment to providing recyclable products whenever possible.'

What We Like: Comfy, absorbent shorts

Best Teen Period Underwear - Cheeky Boybrief

Best Teen Period Underwear: Cheeky Boybrief from £11.49

The Cheeky boybrief style pants have been bestsellers since we launched them and they're now also available in a heavy flow option or organic leopardprint option. Teens and tweens LOVE them. In fact I bumped into an old friend today at a train station and she told me that her daughter has been wearing these since her periods started 4 years ago which makes me SUPER happy. These also start in an adult size 2, so probably suitable for 10 to 11 year olds, depending of course on their build.

Material: Cotton or Organic cotton

Absorbency: Regular or heavy absorbency available, but all styles have absorbency to front and rear waistband.

Design: Boybrief style

Size: Size 2 to size 24.

Price: £11.49 per pair, multibuy offers also available

Customer Reviews: "Purchased for my daughter, just fantastic, wish I'd had them when I was her age (13) Product Review

What We Like: Boybrief styling and absorbency, look just like regular underwear

Things To Consider: Can be warm to wear

Understatement Lace Period Briefs

Best Designer Period Underwear: Understatement Lacy High Waist Period Pants £39.50

Gorgeous period pants from the designer lingerie company Understatement. In my opinion these are extremely similar to the M&S high waist pants, however unlike M&S, these don't contain silver and are made from recycled microfiber.

Material: Recycled microfiber

Absorbency: Medium - in the gusset only and very little protection to the rear

Design: High Waisted, lacy

Size: XS to XXL

Price: £39.50

Customer Reviews: 'Fits really well, and doesn't feel like your wearing period pants at all. Which takes a bit of getting used to. They look too beautiful to be period pants too.'

What We Like: Super stylish and pretty

Things To Consider: Absorbency just in gusset may not be suitable for everyone

How to Wash Period Pants

Rinse or soak overnight in cold water before washing. Wash in maximum 30c with your normal detergent, avoiding fabric softener. Air dry inside out.
