Can Cloth Pads Help Period Cramps?

18 September 2024  |  Admin

Here at Cheeky we've been all about 'Simple Reusable' products since 2008 and our eco friendly reusable period pads and pants is regularly called 'gamechanging' in our Trustpilot reviews.

A massive 80% of women will experience period cramps at some point in their lives and for some this may be completely debilitating, leaving them curled up in a ball, unable to function.

Our customers regularly mention in their Trustpilot reviews that they find their periods are less painful once they've made the switch to reusable pads and pants. This is backed up by reports online:

So, yes, cloth pads can help period cramps and that's based on anecdotal feedback online and customer reviews.

Let's take a look at reasons why this might be the case, keeping in mind that there's no solid medical evidence directly linking cloth pads to cramp relief. However we've included first hand reviews from our customers on each point for your consideration...

Four Reasons Why Cloth Pads Help Period Cramps

Less Chemicals

Many disposable pads contain super absorbent polymers, synthetic fragrances, and a cocktail of other chemicals. Some suggest that these substances could interfere with the body's natural processes, possibly making periods more painful.

Cloth pads, in contrast, are free from these chemicals, offering a more natural alternative. While we can't claim they directly reduce cramps, the absence of irritants will definitely lead to a more comfortable menstrual experience.

"I highly recommend these. Apart from being super environmentally friendly and sustainable, they are much more comfortable than disposable pads and really absorbent.

Interesting side effect for me is that cramps have been practically non existent. Usually I have to take painkillers every 4 hours on a schedule, lose at least one night's sleep and get very distracted at work, but not since using these. Could be something to do with chemicals in the disposables but need to do more research before making that big claim. All I know is that they work for me!" Trustpilot Product Review

Less Irritation

Cloth pads are crafted from natural materials like cotton, bamboo, or hemp, all fabrics known for their breathability and softness against the skin. In contrast, the synthetic materials and chemicals in many disposable pads can cause itching, rashes and pad rub. For someone already dealing with cramps, cloth pads are a great way to reduce this discomfort during the menstrual cycle.

'Honestly life changing. As someone who has really suffered with using disposable products, these have really changed my life. I suffered so much with the bleaching of products and the irritation caused. I began to become irritated by any non-cotton products, and disposable cotton products were so expensive, so I made the change to these, and I'm so glad I did! ' Trustpilot Product Review

External Protection

Discussing internal vs. external menstrual products, it's worth noting that tampons and cups can exacerbate discomfort for those with sensitive pelvic floors or conditions like vaginismus.

Cloth pads and period pants offer a non-invasive alternative that might prevent additional pain, although they don't treat the underlying menstrual pain itself.

"I’m usually a menstrual cup user and have been for many years but I do sometimes find it a little uncomfortable or ill positioned. So I’d been thinking about trying cheeky period pants for a few months....Firstly I didn’t leak, not once, for reference I have a moderate to heavy flow. The knickers are so comfortable and the absorbent section goes up to the waistband front and back so i instantly felt secure and knew I was well protected from leaks. I would wear these day and night!

Also, and this could absolutely be a coincidence, I didn’t suffer my usual excruciating cramps during this period… is there something about inserted products that can make periods more painful? Who knows, but I had a rather pleasant time of the month and I’m completely converted to cheeky pants. Will order a couple more pairs soon for those occasional longer cycles." Trustpilot Review

More Comfortable

Designed for comfort, cloth pads and sanitary napkins come in various shapes, sizes, and thicknesses, customized to individual needs. They're also more breathable than disposable pads, which trap heat and moisture, a potential recipe for discomfort on cramp-heavy days.

The enhanced comfort and reduced stress levels could indirectly alleviate cramps.

'I’ve been debating whether to switch to reusable pads for a while and I’m so glad I did. They are very comfortable to wear and no leaks! Easy to clean and I’d highly recommend.' Trustpilot Product Review

If you think that it's going to be tricky to wash your cloth pads, think again, as they can be washed and dried with little fuss. Immediately after wearing, just soak for at least 30 minutes, or rinse under the tap to remove as much menstrual flow as possible.

Then wash in the washing machine, avoiding fabric softeners. Air dry.
